Staff Review

I have always been a fan of children’s poetry, having grown up with Shel Silverstein and discovering Jack Prelutsky when I was a college student taking Children’s Literature classes. Now in honor of National Poetry Month, there are 2 new collections of note being published. The first is called No More Poems! written by Rhett Miller, a singer-songwriter who lives in the Hudson Valley. There are echoes of Silverstein and Prelutsky here and the poems beg to be read out loud. His collection is illustrated by Caldecott Medal winner Dan Santat. The second book is The Proper Way to Meet a Hedgehog, a collection of how to poems edited by Paul Janeczko, who passed away in February and edited many popular poetry collections for kids. The illustrations in this book are lovely and the poems have been collected from a number of popular writers including Douglas Florian and J. Patrick Lewis, two well-known children’s poets with many of their own collections. Both will be added to my ever-growing library of children’s poetry books. -Melissa
