2017 marks the 140th year of “old building.”
Before the fire:
60 years ago this month our original building burned. The fire reduced the building to the brownstone shell.
Passersby recall seeing piles of smoldering books and debris on Hope Street.
The original building was built in 1877 as a gift to the Town of Bristol by Maria (DeWolf) Rogers. The architect was Stephen C. Earle. He also designed the Burnside building.
Maria Rogers (our founder)
Evidently there was a portrait of Robert Rogers (Maria’s husband) in one of the two banks that occupied our original building. It must have burned in the fire, July 1957. Does anyone out there know of another portrait of Robert Rogers? If so, please let us know!
